Each morning on my Bennett Valley farm near Sonoma Mountain Stonewall Baby Jane gathers near my window to gently whinny and let me know it’s time to arise for the morning feeding. She is wise, and headstrong, and has always been Boss Mare in the herd. With her purposeful prodding, I don’t hesitate for long before heading to the haystack.

Baby Jane is a Stonewall Sporthorse, bred by Michael Muir in a long line of Appaloosa ~ Percheron cross breeds, combining the gentle nature and power of the most refined of the draft horse with the color and spirited personality of the American Indian plains ponies. She is 17 years old, and has been driven in competition, though these days she is more often founds on the trails and beaches here in Northern California’s wine country.

In Jane I find the beauty of a willing spirit. Growing up in rural Upper Michigan, I often spent my days riding my horse through old Menominee Indian Burial grounds. Stopping along the river bank, I would search for Indian arrowheads and let my imagination wander. Hours would pass as I sketched scenes of what I fancied had occurred many years before.

During the colder months, Baby Jane’s white coat grows thick, and her spots rise up as if to protect her from the cold. This canvas was painted with love to capture the friendship she gives, and the unconditional willingness she offers when asked to carry me along in my dreams.

For anyone who has a best friend, I offer Stonewall Baby Jane.
